If I have a Pokémon with a unique Tera type, and I transfer it into another game, such as sword and shield, and then transfer it back into scarlet and violet, will it still have that unique Tera typing, even though Tera types don’t exist in previous generations? Does the game still have a way to record what your Tera type is that work in previous generations?

The only games that let you transfer backward are gen 2 and gen 1. You can't transfer Pokemon from SV to SwSh.
I transferred a breloom from Violet to Brilliant Diamond and multiple mons from Violet to complete the dex in Shield. Did sumwun forget Pokemon Home exists?
@sumwun I'm pretty sure that only happens with Bank and LGPE

Yes, they retain their Tera type.

To test, I transferred my Tera Dark Mew (as well as other Pokemon with unique Tera typings) from Violet to Shield. They obviously didn't have the Tera typing even when sending them out in battle. I put the Pokemon in the Home Box, and then prepared to move from Home to Violet. In the Home box, the tera types didn't show, but when I moved the Pokemon from the Home box to the Violet box, the Tera types showed in the summary again. In Violet, I terastalized, and the Tera typings were still the same.

Hope this helped!
