I'd like to raise a Ground/Water type, but I'm not quite sure on which one. Could you tell me what's good or bad about each and which one I should pick?

unless they chose septile or chestnut or wit ever starter and ev/iv breed it and trained it up perfectly or they just like grass types
Which is rare. Face it people, most grass pokemon suck
but quite a few people use trevenent which is in UU and it runs horn leech or wood hammer maybe even drain punch
Swampert, Quagsire and Seismitoad all get Ice Punch, and Whiscash and Gastrodon get Ice Beam, so that's not that bad if you outspeed or predict a switch in.
Swampert because I counted up there stats and it came down to swampert and siesmetoad swampert can mega evolve so thats why he's better than siesmetoad also he has a better stat total so swampert also swamperrts a starter how could you say no?

ok, we can just forget seismitoad and whiscash as they doesn't really have much outside of NU. so it comes down to quagsire, swampert and gastrodon

quagsire

pros:

  • unaware is one of the best abilities in the game
  • can check some common setup threats thanks to unaware and curse/stockpile. noticeable scizor and aegislash
  • a movepool that helps its ability with stall moves like recover, stockpile, yawn, infestation and scald

cons:

  • 430 Base stat is really bad in most tiers
  • low sp.def, so its hard to stop special sweepers for it
  • its low speed gives it a though time stalling as it needs to survive an attack before it can set up (quagsire has decent bulk, so this shouldn't be a problem although special attackers is still scary)
  • faces stiff competition from other bulky water Pokemons like rotom-w, slowbro and gastrodon itself

Swampert

pros:

  • higest total base stat of the three with 535 compared to 475 and 430
  • works good both offensive and defensive thanks to high attack and good bulk
  • good movepool with SR, waterfall, earthquake and stone edge as examples

cons:

  • its ability could be better
  • low speed

gastrodon

pros

  • average base stat with 475. speed is its only really bad stat , which isn't really necessary on a stall Pokemon
  • its special, which makes it different from the others
  • instant recovery with recover. it has toxic too, so you must do over 50% to take it down which is hard because of its good bulk
  • a good ability which gives it an immunity to water attacks

cons:

  • nerfed heavily along with the rain nerf as its most important role was to counter rain teams
  • yeah, that covers almost everything

the choice

i know this is annoying, but it depends on what you want. I would use quagsire just because its my favorite Pokemon, but I think most people would prefer swampert in gen 6. not sure though. its all option based. to sum up:

  • if you are really weak to psychical set up sweepers: quagsire
  • if you are playing gen 5 and need a rain counter or if your team is already way to psychically biased: gastrodon
  • anything else: swampert
