Gen VI

Blastoise (M) @ Blastoistinite
Ability: Mega Launcher
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpA / 16 SpD
Modest Nature

  • Water Pulse / Hydro Pump
  • Aura Sphere
  • Dragon Pulse
  • Dark Pulse

What we thought was the worst Mega Evolution turned out to be one of the top Megas out there. It can fully abuse it's new Ability with it's buffed SAtk and Defenses. Breed these Moves with a Male Clawitzer to obtain such a behemoth. By far the best Kanto Starter Mega Evolution.

Isn’t ice beam more effective than dragon pulse? Most dragon types are 4 times weak to ice and ice beam helps with slow grass types
I would recommend water pulse over hydro pump because mega launcher boosts the power to 90, and then STAB boosts it to 135, which is very big. Also, hydro pump has low accuracy, so water pulse is definitely better.

Hello people! How you doing? Never mind. Anyway, today I plan on a short but hopefully interesting review on the famous Blastoise! I'll do this in sections, giving an overview, pros, cons, and sets for it's respected tiers and uses. I this case, lets begin!!

Overview

Everyone knows about this overgrown Squirrel turtle hybrid. It's got bulk to jump at and a very decent movepool. Although it's never really seen much shine since Gen 3/4, it's definitely not a forgotten Pokemon. It also has access to the rather exclusive rapid spin, making a fairly reliable spinner. It doesn't however appreciate the poison damage from toxic spikes, and with almost no recovery, it doesn't appreciate repeated switch ins. Play it carefully however, and you'll be laughing at your opponents petty Night slash or psychic right in their face.

Sets

Bulky Spinner

Blastoise @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
- Toxic
- Scald
- Rapid Spin
- Dragon Tail

This is one of the most common used sets in UU. By spreading toxic out then tailing your opponent of of the arena, you'll find your sweepers will be making short work of your enemy's walls. Spin gets rid of the obvious hazards with is good with Pokemon like Yanmega with needs. Speaking of which, Yanmega struggles to 2HKo even with no SpDef investment.

Choice Specs

Blastoise @ Choice Specs
Ability: Rain Dish
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Surf

The power that this far underrated set brings catches many Pokemon off guard. Hydro pump does immense damage against everything not named Snorlax or Milotic. Hp Grass hits annoying Swampert or Quagsire (unless your names flare you won't be using Quag very often, but whatever). Ice beam 2HKOs SpDef Roserade, and KOes all others. Tho it won't like a leaf storm to the pokeballs.

I would put more sets, (i got so many it isn't even funny >.<) but I am going to break the limit.

Pros.

Respectable bulk mixed with a good movepool that includes Rpaid spin makes for a troll and a half. The specs set isn't half bad either in terms of power.

Cons

Although it is a good bulky water type, it isn't the best. If you don't nee rapid spin, it's best just to go with Swampert, Miltolic or Suicune. All have good ovepools and greater bulk.

Blastoise also don't have any real recovery unless you count ChestoRest. And that isn't exactly reliable.

I hope this helped you in anyway, or at least you got a cheap laugh from it.

0.0 that first one you totally stole from me. :P jk.
'Hydro pump does immense damage against everything not named Snorlax or Milotic.'

*names Arcanine one of those*
the firs one, as it says, is one of the most common sets around >.<
Actually 252 HP / 4 SDef Blastoise can survive a LO Leaf Storm from Rosy with around 8% HP if it was at 100% when it got hit c:
Any water ground type has only 4x weaknesses: all attacking grass moves and freeze-dry!
What nature on the Bulky Spinner set?

Gen 8

(oh lawd, they gave him Shell Smash)

Blastoise @ White Herb
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 SpA / 80 SpD / 176 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shell Smash
- Aura Sphere
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam

Okay, so, as of the time I write this, Blastoise remains unreleased in Gen 8, but when it becomes available through Pokemon Home, I can guarantee you this is going to be a crazy popular option to run it with. Offensive standard Blastoise is here, folks. They buffed him with a new move. Merry Christmas, Blastoise.

Update: My predictions were correct. Blastoise ranks OU upon arrival in Smogon's competitive ladder, and it actually outspeeds Cloyster, another potent Shell Smasher in OU. If your target also opts for White Herb instead of Focus Sash, you'll beat them with the Aura Sphere you pack.

Gen V

Blastoise (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Rain Dish
EVs: 128 HP / 184 Def / 196 SpD
Modest Nature

  • Scald
  • Aqua Ring
  • Protect
  • Ice Beam

A more defensive Blastoise, that can do decnt damage with Scald and Ice Beam, Scald especially with STAB and hopefully Rain support. A combined Rain Dish, Leftovers, and Aqua Ring can do quite a lot of healing, and Scald can burn the foe, meaning Blastoise has even better defensive capabilities. Protect can give you a free turn with healing and burn damage for the foe.

Role: Annoyer

Blastoise (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 4 HP / 96 Def / 156 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature

  • Iron Defense
  • Mud Slap
  • Muddy Water
  • Aqua Ring / Toxic

If you ever want to really get on someone's nerves, Add this to your team.

Mud-Slap Muddy Water combo Lets Mud Slap Start for some annoying Accuracy hax, and then he can start doing a good amount of Damage, while still destroying your opponent's accuracy.

Iron Defense lets him Quickly Shoot up his Defense to be as good as his Special Defense.

And You have the Option of Aqua Ring or Toxic for More consistant Damage or More Healing on top of leftovers.

Gen III

Blastoise (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 136 HP / 16 Atk / 252 Def / 104 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Toxic
- Dig
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam

  • Toxic
  • Dig - Physical
  • Hydro Pump - Special
  • Ice Beam - Special

Equalized attacking stats by using just 16 Ev's, so another mixed Starter it is!

Toxic is painful to anything not steel or poison type, which is alot.
Dig takes out Poison and Steel types, but it's main purpose is stalling out Toxic without using protect, and dealing some decent damage when it hits, Sweet!
Ice Beam takes down birds who you can't hit with the Toxic + Dig ( Uh oh ) Combo.
And Hydro Pump (He needs the extra power in there) is for a nasty STAB hit to anything levitating or that just needs to be nailed.
Go Blastoise!

Earthquake is better than Dig.

Double/Triple Battle

Blastoise (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Torrent / Rain Dish
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Water Spout
- Surf
- Blizzard / Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Electric]

Give this guy Rain Dance support, and you'll be OHKOing everything. Torrent is probably the best ability, as it helps make Surf better when you are down on HP. However, Rain Dish can keep you healthy, especially if you team up Blastoise with Heal Pulse support. Water Spout OHKOs every foe you'll face (exaggerating, but it still is incredibly powerful). Surf is for use when you are down on HP and is still an effective multi-battle attack, especially if you team it up with Water Absorb or Storm Drain. Blizzard gives coverage while also hitting multiple foes. However, it is inaccurate, especially since you won't be having Hail support since if you will have any weather support it will be Rain Dance. Ice Beam is more accurate yet less powerful and only hits one foe. HP Electric is coverage.

Blastoise (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Rest
- Toxic
- Protect
- Water Pulse

Here we have a basic Tank/Annoyer set for Blastoise. Toxic wears the opponents HP down each turn. Protect helps Toxic do its thing + Keeps Blastoise alive with Leftovers. Rest is when you have bad health and need to heal. Water Pulse is STAB + 20% chance of confusing the opponent.

Blastoise @ Blastoisinite
Ability: Mega Launcher
EVs: 252 Def / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Quiet Nature
- Surf / Hydro Pump / Scald
- Dark Pulse / Dragon Pulse
- Dragon Tail / Ice Beam / Earthquake / Aura Sphere / Aqua Ring
- Rapid Spin / Ice Beam / Earthquake / Aura Sphere / Aqua Ring

  • Surf / Hydro Pump / Scald (STAB)
  • Dark Pulse / Dragon Pulse (with the ability Mega Launcher, this should do a lot of damage)
  • Dragon Tail / Ice Beam / Earthquake / Aura Sphere / Aqua Ring (coverage)
  • Rapid Spin / or one of the above moves (Rapid Spin is very useful and I believe Blastoise is the best Rapid Spin user.)

Water pusle over surf it's the same power for mega launcher and it has confuse chance

This is a set I used in RU a while back. It's not uber competitive, but it is silly to try and take down without a heavy hitter with electric or grass type attacks.

Blastoise @ Leftovers
Ability: Rain Dish
EVs: 212 HP / 76 Def / 220 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Rain Dance
- Aqua Ring
- Protect

Protect when you have Aqua Ring and rain going allows you to recover 36% of your health before they can hit you again. STAB + Rain boosted Scald hits extremely well considering there are no EVs invested. The burn chance is fantastic offensively and defensively as well. EVs are such that you hit a leftovers number on HP and a good threshhold on Sp Def. Def is somewhat helped out by the burn chance. This is the epitome of stall, but if you can avoid status, this Pokemon can pretty much outstall any other Pokemon (at least in RU at the time).

Another set that I didn't use competitively but certainly could throw someone off their game is this:

Blastoise @ Power Herb
Ability: Rain Dish
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Skull Bash
- Power-Up Punch

Obviously dispose of any ghost types before bringing this one out, but it should be able to hold its own and dish out some hurt itself too. The opponent won't want to leave it in too long either or it could start steamrolling his/her team.

For a truly competitive build, I think Mega-Blastoise makes an excellent spinner and really discourages those spin-blocking ghosts with its Mega-Launcher boosted Dark Pulse.

Blastoise @ Blastoisinite
Ability: Rain Dish
EVs: 240 HP / 16 Def / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Dark Pulse
- Aura Sphere
- Scald

I have always found Scald far more useful than the 10 base power increase you get from Surf or Water Pulse (after Mega Launcher boost), so that's why it's the water STAB of choice. Rapid Spin for obvious reasons. Dark Pulse discourages spin blocking, and Aura Sphere can do some nice solid damage after the Mega Launcher boost. The EVs are set up to maximize the punch Blastoise deals out. I pushed 240 into HP to maximize HP but reduce Rock/Spike damage, and the rest into Def. Rain Dish is chosen since you should probably be mega evolving immediately upon entering the fight, and so there's an off chance you may get a rain dish recovery as opposed to no chance of using torrent.

Well... and there goes me thinking this was a bad Mega! Let me correct anyone else who thinks so with a stupidly powerful set:

Blastoise @ Blastoisinite
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 SpA / 58 SpD / 200 Spe
Modest / Timid Nature
- Water Pulse
- Aura Sphere
- Dark Pulse
- Dragon Pulse

  • Water Pulse: STAB, boosted by ability.
  • Aura Sphere: Epic, ability boosted, kills things.
  • Dark Pulse: Boosted by ability, kills Psychic types.
  • Dragon Pulse: Kills Dragon types, ability boosted.

So, should be self-explanatory: Switch in, Mega Evolve, rip your enemies limb from limb.

This is a moveset for a Mega Blastoise

Blastoise @ Blastoisinite
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Water Pulse
- Aura Sphere
- Dragon Pulse
- Dark Pulse

Moveset
Water Pulse - Stab move, boost to 90 Base Power with Mega Launcher
Aura Sphere - Coverage for Normal, Dark, Ice, Rock, and Steel Types, Never Misses, boost to 120 Base Power with Mega Launcher
Dragon Pulse - Coverage for Dragon Types, boost to 128 Base Power with Mega Launcher
Dark Pulse - Coverage for Psychic and Dark Types, Chance to Flinch, Boost to 120 Base Power with Mega Launcher
Ability: Mega Launcher - This ability gives a 50% boost to any pulse/aura moves and essentially what makes a Mega Blastoise moveset
I really hope this helps anyone who wishes to run a Bulky Special Sweeper Mega Blastoise.

Nice Blastoise set all the moves are boosted by mega launcher but instead of speed I would do HP because Blastoise is slow here's a link for Mega Blastoise sprite use it if you want https://projectpokemon.org/images/normal-sprite/blastoise-mega.gif + https://img.pokemondb.net/sprites/items/blastoisinite.png

Gen 8 NU
Blastoise
Blastoise @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 60 Def / 196 Spe
Impish Nature
- Scald
- Rapid Spin
- Toxic / Yawn
- Flip Turn

Scald is for the chance to burn to cripple physical attackers. Rapid Spin clears up hazards on your side. Toxic is to wear down a Pokémon's HP. Flip Turn is for pivoting. You could also use Yawn instead of Toxic to force a switch and you can bring in a teammate with Flip Turn. 196 speed EVs lets this Blastoise set outspeed Max Speed EV Jolly Bewear.

Gen 8 Doubles Ubers

Blastoise-Gmax @ Wacan Berry / Sitrus Berry
Ability: Rain Dish
Gigantamax: Yes
EVs: 248 HP / 96 Def / 104 SpD / 60 Spe
Impish Nature
- Follow Me
- Fake Out
- Flip Turn / Aqua Jet
- Yawn

Probably the best support Pokémon in the metagame right now. Follow Me redirects non-spread attacks towards Blastoise, allowing it's ally to set up, attack, or switch out more safely. Fake Out flinches an opponent and prevents them from making a move. Flip Turn is for pivoting, while Aqua Jet is for finishing off faster opponents, such as a Calyrex-S that was brought down to it's Sash, and can be used to activate an ally's Weakness Policy. Yawn puts opponents to sleep the turn after it's used, and can cause tricky dynamax decisions for the opponent. With a Wacan Berry, Blastoise can tank electric moves from Zacian-C, Kyogre, and even a dynamaxed Geomancy Xerneas. Sitrus Berry is also a good option if you want instant recovery, which, in doubles, is better than the passive recovery provided by Leftovers. The EVs allow Blastoise to survive two Astral Barrages from Calyrex-S (reminder that it has Unnerve, so Sitrus Berry does nothing) and use Fake Out before 0 Spe Rillaboom (yes, Rillaboom is viable in Doubles Ubers).

Mixed Shell Smash
Gen 8 NU

Blastoise @ White Herb
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Shell Smash
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Earthquake

Mixed Shell Smash set. Normally, Blastoise uses Dark Pulse instead of Earthquake as well as running Modest nature. However, with Earthquake along with a +speed nature, you have a better time against some checks like Heliolisk and Toxicroak. Toxicroak drops to Earthquake, something Ice Beam cannot do at a +2 special attack boost. Heliolisk drops to Earthquake as well, and you actually outspeed Choice Scarf Heliolisk after a +2 speed boost from Shell Smash since this set has a speed boosting nature. The other 3 moves are pretty much self explanatory. Shell Smash is to boost your attacking power and speed. Surf is for STAB. Ice Beam is for coverage against the few grass types in the tier. If you want to use this set, pair it with a Pokemon who can beat Vaporeon for Blastoise.

Moveset for Wartortle.

Gen V

Wartortle (F) @ Eviolite
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 4 SpA / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Yawn
- Protect
- Scald
- Rest / Toxic

This Is the standard Moveset for Wartortle. Yawn is there to put foes to sleep, Protect Is there to ensure that Yawn will hit, and you won't receive damage. Scald is there for STAB and if you are lucky, Burn Hax which makes you a better Wall. Rest is to recover when you need it, and Toxic is there to badly Poison foes. Rest is more recommended when it's not used in a Drizzle team, and Toxic for running Rain Dish with Drizzle.

Doubles / Triples

Blastoise (M) @ Leftovers
Abililty: Rain Dish
EVs: 252 HP / 40 Def / 216 SpA
Modest Nature
- Surf
- Blizzard
- Aqua Ring
- Protect

Surf is STAB and hits multiple spaces, Blizzard is coverage and hits multiple spaces.
Aqua Ring + Lefties is nice, and if rain comes up you have RD at your service.
Protect can come handy in weird situations and can stall out for more HP.

Blastiose @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 108 Def / 144 SpD
Calm Nature
- Roar
- Rapid Spin
- Toxic
- Scald

Special Bulky with Rapid spin to get rid of entry hazards and toxic to stall with also roar to switch out Unwanted Foes. This goes great with Blissey because Blastiose can't heal himself so you can Wish with Blissey then switch to Blastiose when Blastoise low on HP!

Physical set

Blastoise @ Leftovers
Ability: Rain Dish
EVs: 12 HP / 252 Atk / 122 Def / 122 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Earthquake
- Dragon Tail
- Toxic

Aqua Jet - STAB, great priority move
Earthquake - One of the best moves in the game :)
Dragon Tail - Great move for such a defensive Pokemon.
Toxic - Good and reliable status move.

I use this set on the Blastoise on my rain team and he kicks ass.
