Mega Tyranitar or Mega Gyarados?

Question

I am playing Pokemon ultra sun and moon and desperately need a DD sweeper mega Pokemon (I refuse myself to use a team without mega Pokemon once I get one). I'm duvidous between mega gyarados and mega tyranitar. both have astronomical attack stats, medium speed (but get's strongly increased by DD) andgreat defenses. i'm truly duvidous which one I should use on my team

my team is:

Z-Move sweeper Marshadow
Scarfed Magneton (which I prefered over magnezone due to the higher speed)
Bulky Sitrus Berry Mantine
Leftovers Support Blissey
Focus Sash Sticky Web Ribombee (that is my favorite Pokemon and i'm not considering remove it)
The question

if you have a moveset, it will drastically increase your chances to have a best answer. I'm really suprised with how fast it takes for an answer to be gaven, so I'll wait for an answer. Thank you.

Mega Tyranitar is a better Rocks Setter than Dragon Dance Sweeper. The only advantage it has over Gyrados as a Dragon Dance user on your team is that you're already using Mantine, so 2 Water types may be a little repetitive.

I get that Ribombee is a Sticky Web setter, and you want to keep it, but Araquanid, Shuckle, and Galvantula do this far better. Ribombee does better with Quiver Dance, but even then it is outclassed by Volcarona and Pherimosa. :P

sumwun, i'm playing this on pokemon showdown, so it is for battling other people.

but again, i'm not ANY considering changing out ribombee, so please, do not keep forcing it. i just won't take it seriously no matter how good the arguments are.

USM Ubers (that is not anime, please do not come with useless sentimental answers saying that tyranitar suffers with mega evolution and soford i should use mega gyarados. that is just stupid).

In that case, Tyranitar is better without it's Mega Stone and better than Mega Gyarados in Ubers, as well as both choices being outclasses by Mega Salamence as Dragon Dance Sweepers. :P

Tbh, if you want an Ubers team that can keep up with the metagame, you need to lose all of your Pokémon on your team currently except Marshadow. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but competitive battling involves using what is viable, and ignoring preferences that bring no competitive value (like using favorites that are unlivable, refusing to accept the current metagame, etc.). :P

stakatacool, thank you for the tip. i'll use mega salamence, keep marshadow. but I'LL KEEP RIBOMBEE!!! i don't care if it is unviable, i SWEAR i'll keep ribombee (sorry if this sounds harsh). if you could create a teem keeping the focus sash ribombee, marshadow and mega salamence, i'll be happy to give you a best answer. but i'll ignore it if you ermove the ribombee on the team, thanks.

I would say that it is based off your preference.
I think that mega tyranitar is extremely bulky, and having its special defence boosted by sand stream, it can be an really good sweeper. Even though it’s speed is lower than mega gyarados’s, it has stronger defences, stronger attack, and gets the benefit of doing a bit of damage every turn to the opponent. Even if gyarados does has better speed, you are probaly not going for a spedy mega, as 81 and 71 are bad speed stats. Mega gyarados, though, has a better typing, as mega tyranitar can be knocked down quickly with approximately 40 percent of all types. Mega gyarados has a abillity that is worse than sand stream, mold breaker. So, if you want a faster Pokemon(stil pretty slow) with less weaknesses, go for mega gyarados. If you don’t mind slowness and like beast attack, go for mega tyranitar.

momo, thank you, but did you read my question carefully? i said i was going for a DRAGON DANCING mega pokemon, soford both will become terribly fast after 2 DD. but truly thank you, i think i'm going for the mega tyranitar, since it hits way harder, is bulkier, and speed won't matter when boosted.

How can Tyranitar "be an ultimate sweeper"? This is how it does against a Pokemon that appears on 70% of Ubers teams.

I don't think it's "really good" either when it's checked by a whole bunch more common Pokemon in Ubers, like ground Arceus, Xerneas, Zygarde, and Marshadow. Its strong sand steam-boosted defenses don't help much when it has so many weaknesses, and the damage from sand stream should be completely irrelevant when it's aiming to one-shot as many opponents as possible.

Salamence is the best Pokemon in Ubers at mega evolving and using dragon dance. Unlike both Gyarados and Tyranitar, Salamence isn't countered by Groudon, which is the most common Pokemon in Ubers. Earthquake hits rock and steel Pokemon that resist flying, such as Necrozma and Magearna. Roost lets it find more opportunities to set up. Intimidate weakens an opponent before mega evolving and possibly makes setup easier. 212 speed EVs lets mega Salamence outspeed 100 base speed opponents, like Yveltal and Rayquaza. (though it might still have trouble with 100 acid speed opponents) 44 HP lets it survive Ho-Oh's life orb-boosted brave bird after taking stealth rock damage.

Double edge is a recoil move. So, if you want a strong aerialated move, you should try Thrash, to sweep.

You guys make such an overreacted deal about recoil moves. Recoil is better than being locked in to a move that someone could throw out and resist. Double-Edge is the better deal by far.
