Does beat up actually have a type?

Well what I mean is beat up still a dark type move or is it depending on what pokemon is using it?

The move is Dark type but the attacks from the other pokemon on your team are typeless so there is no super-effectiveness. Dark pokemon on your team do get STAB though.

It's apparently changed in B/W - the attack is based on the user's Attack stat, not the stats of the party pokemon.

As far as my knowledge of using it is, it's a Dark-type move for any Pokemon, and Dark-type Pokemon in your party will give STAB to it.
