Do I need to catch a Ditto? Or do you just need male and female parents that are in the same field group? Does the female need to be the Pokémon that I want to hatch out of the egg?

Ditto is the easiest option, since it can be used multiple times to breed with nearly all Pokemon (except those in the Undiscovered Egg Group & another Ditto). Ditto is also the easiest option in breeding with Pokemon in a small egg group, e.g. Rotom, as it can be difficult to find a partner for some Pokemon sometimes.

The female Pokemon needs to be the species that you want the egg to be. The male Pokemon will pass down any compatible egg moves to the offspring. For list of compatible breeding moves, go onto the species' Bulbapedia page and it will list the moves that can be bred to that species. Note that the father must have the moves in its moveset in order to pass them down.

List of Pokemon by Egg Group - this list is pretty useful, it lets you know what Pokemon are in which egg group. I mean, there are 649 Pokemon, so it's kinda hard to remember them all.

Additionally, a female parent with a hidden ability will have 60% chance of passing it down to the offspring, but not if the Pokemon is bred with a Ditto.

The Ditto Breeding Way

Probably the most simple thing to do, and is very helpful when wanting to complete the Pokedex. You don't have to search for extra Pokemon. How this works is you have to find a Pokemon (of any gender) that you want. Then, they will stay in the daycare, and the egg that is bred is the first evolution of the Pokemon that isn't Ditto. :3

Male-Female Breeding

The classic breeding option. Here, a male and female Pokemon that share the same egg group will be placed in the daycare. Their offspring's move and species will depend on the parents. The mother always passed on the species, and the nature. The offspring's moves would be the father's, and then if the mother had any of the moves in her egg move set, it would be passed down to the offspring.

Nature Inheriting
In Emerald, if the mother or Ditto is holding an Everstone, the mother's nature will be passed down to the offspring. This won't work with the father though. In Gen IV, this was changed to whoever spouse possesses the Everstone, there will be a 50% chance that the Everstone possessor's nature will be passed down to the offspring. In Black and White 2, the spouse holding the Everstone will always have their offspring have that nature.
