I'll write down all of the mechanics I can think of in an answer below. I know most of these mechanics were only seen in the first 3 gens, but those games are still pretty popular today.

Gen 1

  • The critical hit ratio is based on Speed
  • A move's secondary effects don't occur if the target shares a type with the move used (ex. Body Slam won't paralyze a Snorlax). I'm pretty sure this occured only if the Pokemon that used the move shared a type with the target and then used a move which shares a type with the target. I'll do some more research later.
  • The Special stat
  • All moves have a very small chance to miss, even ones with 100% accuracy.

Gen 2

  • Gen 2's DV system
  • Hidden Power DVs
  • Damage category pre-physical-special split
  • Items were introduced

Gen 3

  • Hidden Power IVs
  • Abilities were introduced
  • EVs were introduced
