Rhydon was the first pokemon ever created. This is why all the statues in Pokemon gyms are shaped like Rhydons.

Actually, I was not any of them. It was Rhydon. I know, weird. :D

That'd probably be why Game Freak (The creators of Pokemon) have such a big soft side for that guy...
