Pokemon was created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. He based Pokemon on real world animals because as a kid he liked exploring. He got the idea of catching Pokemon because one of his hobbies as a kid was catching insects and tadpoles. Tajiri formed Game Freak with the help of his friends. Originally his game was called Capsule Monsters but was later changed into Pocket Monsters.
