What does 'Special' mean in Gen 1?

In the gen1 games there are no special defense and special attack... But there is "Special" and I don't understand that..

In Gen 1, the Special stat accounts for both SpA and SpD.

Comments

This also means amnesia raises special attack and special defense by 2 stages at the same time, which in turn means amnesia is broken.
