What happened to my chain?

I was chaining sneasel and then I walked into a shaking grass and the chain broke. But the thing is I encountered a sneasel, which is what I was chaining. After that the pokeradar music stopped and Poketch app #20 said the chain was done. Why did this happen? (For anyone wanting to know this was Pokemon pearl.)

Your chain always has a chance of breaking each time you walk into shaking grass. When it breaks, the game generates a random Pokemon from the Pokemon that can normally be encountered in your grass patch. For example, if Sneasel's rarity was 25%, then you have a 25% chance of encountering another Sneasel even when your chain is breaking.
