PokéBase - Pokémon Q&A

After finding that the Hydreigon that I was training in attack fell through and failed, I looked for an alternative. Haxorus immediately came to mind. But, after facing Grant for the umpteenth time, I wondered out loud why he bothered using a Tyrantrum. Curious to see why, I checked out it's stats, and I want another opinion: Which of these Pokemon is better as an attacker? Haxorus or Tyrantrum?

Haxorus. Hands down.

These Pokémon have some differences, but both are great choices.

Haxorus

Haxorus
Haxorus is a wonderful Pokémon. It's stats are amazing, with a focus on attack and speed.

Stats:
HP: 76
Attack: 147
Defense: 90
Sp.Atk: 60
Sp.Def: 70
Speed: 97

Pros:

  • Higher attack
  • Higher speed
  • Mold Breaker allows it to utilize Earthquake
  • Access to Swords Dance and Dragon Dance
  • Only three weaknesses

Tyrantrum

Tyrantrum
Tyrantrum is also a good option and in some situations it can be just as useful as Haxorus.

Stats:
HP: 82
Attack: 121
Defense: 119
Sp.Atk: 69
Sp.Def: 59
Speed: 71

Pros:

  • Slightly bulkier
  • Strong Jaw allows it to utilize moves like Fire Fang to take out Ice and Grass threats
  • Access to STAB boosted Rock type moves
  • Access to Dragon Dance

I would choose Haxorus over Tyrantrum. Tyrantrum may be bulkier, but has double the weaknesses that Haxorus does. Most importantly, Haxorus has higher attack and speed stats which are two of the most important factors for a Physical Sweeper. However, in the end it is of course your decision and practically every Pokémon shines in some situations.

Well let's compare them against each other:

Haxorus

Haxorus - Looks better Shiny imo.

Advantages:

  • Excellent Ability in Mold Breaker, to which it can use Earthquake to hit Pokémon with Levitate.
  • Outstanding Attack Stat at 147 respectively, which when maxed out can reach a whopping 432 Attack!
  • Above Average Speed Stat at 97 respectively, which can reach 322 when completely maxed out! (But obviously you can only completely max out one Stat Natures included.)
  • Decent Defense Stat at 90 respectively.
  • 4 ½ Resistances; to Fire, Water, Grass and Electric respectively.
  • Can learn some excellent Attacking moves to go with that huge Attack Stat, namely: Outrage, Dragon Claw, Earthquake, Dual Chop, Brick Break, Rock Slide, Shadow Claw, X-Scissor, Poison Jab, Night Slash etc.
  • Can learn Stat boosting moves such as: Swords Dance, Dragon Dance and Hone Claws.
  • 540 Total Base Stat.

Disadvantages:

  • Other than Mold Breaker it's Ability are pretty poor, but who needs other Abilities when you have Mold Breaker right?
  • It has no Immunities... nope not even one, due to Haxorus being a pure Dragon type!
  • Three 2x Weaknesses; to Ice, Dragon and Fairy respectively. (This isn't too bad to be totally honest at least it doesn't have 7 like Tyranitar.)
  • It loses 1/8 of it's maximum HP upon switching in when Stealth Rock's is on the field. (Again it's not that bad, it could be worse at least it's not ½.)

Tyrantrum

Tyrantrum

Advantages:

  • Excellent Abilities in Strong Jaw and Rock Head (albeit unreleased).
  • It only has a two stage Evolution and it Evolves from Tyrunt starting at Level 39, Haxorus has a three stage Evolution; Axew Evolves into Fraxure starting at Level 38, which Evolves into Haxorus starting at Level 48.
  • Excellent Attack and Defense Stats at 121 and 119 respectively.
  • 4 ½ Resistances; to Normal, Flying Poison and Electric respectively and 1 ¼ Resistance to Fire respectively.
  • Can learn some decent Attacking moves such as Head Smash, Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Crunch, Brick Break, Stone Edge, Fire Fang, Thunder Fang and Ice Fang.
  • Head Smash would be excellent when used with the Rock Head Ability, while Crunch and the Elemental Fang moves are fantastic when used with Strong Jaw.
  • Can learn Stat boosting moves such as Dragon Dance, Hone Claws and Rock Polish.
  • Can learn Stealth Rock.
  • 521 Total Base Stat.

Disadvantages:

  • Poor Special Attack at 69 respectively. (Not that it needs it.)
  • Terrible Special Defense at 59 respectively.
  • Average Speed Stat at 71 respectively.
  • 6 2x Weaknesses to; Fighting, Ground, Steel, Ice, Dragon and Fairy respectively.
  • No Immunities... nope not one!
  • It loses 1/8 of it's maximum HP upon switching in when Stealth Rock's is on the field. (This isn't too bad, it could be worse at least it's not ½.)

Conclusion

The clear winner imo is Haxorus, with it's sheer power.

Haxorus

Anyway Haxorus is currently ranked in UU by Smogon, while Tyrantrum is in RU.

Alrighty it's time to compare some Pokemon. This time it's Haxorus vs Tyrantrum

Let's look at their base stats:

Haxorus

Hp: 76
Attack: A massive 147
Defense: 90
Special Attack: 60
Special Defense: 70
Speed: 97

Tyrantrum

Hp: 82
Attack: 121
Defense: 119
Special Attack: 69
Special Defense: 59
Speed: 71

Haxorus pretty much outclasses Tyrantrum in every stat, except defense.
This damage calc is one of the only good things about Tyrantrum:

>0+ Atk Choice Band Weavile Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tyrantrum: 200-236 (54.3 - 64.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

It can take Physical Hits extremely well. Haxorus would die immediately.

Haxorus can dish out some incredibly powerful hits, like to this steelix:

>+1 252+ Atk Haxorus Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Steelix: 214-252 (73.5 - 86.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

And that's after a Dragon Dance.
Now let's look at their movepools:

Haxorus has a very mediocre movepool, but it has access to amazing moves such as Superpower or Outrage

Tyrantrum's movepool isn't any better, it's actually worse. But it gets great moves like the elemental fang moves(including poison fang) and Rock Slide. If it gets Outrage in ORAS, all other dragons better watch out.

Now, abilities:

Haxorus has the ever-so-loved Mold Breaker, which can be used to take out them pesky Rotom-Ws everywhere.
Tyrantrum also gets a good ability, Strong Jaw. It boosts it's Elemental Fang moves by 50%, which is really good. Strong Jaw also boosts these moves:
Bite
Crunch
Poison Fang
Hyper Fang

Alrighty I think we're done here. You can use both if you like, but is prefer to use this guy:

Here's a good set for Haxorus

Haxorus @ Lefties or Lum Berry(your choice)
Trait: Mold Breaker
Adamant Nature
EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 Hp
Moves:
Dragon Dance
Outrage/Dragon Claw
Earthquake/Superpower
Poison Jab

Hope I helped!
