First off, Battles itself is a huge term, there are some genres:

First off, there is Normal rules, here they are:
-No. of Pokemon: No restrictions
Pokemon level: Set all to Lv. 50
Special Pokemon: Permitted
Same Pokemon: Permitted
Same items: Permitted

Secondly there are Flat rules:
-No. of Pokemon: 3
Pokemon level: Up to Lv. 50
Special Pokemon: Banned
Same Pokemon: Banned
Same items: Banned

Lastly there are 'No restrictons' rules:
-No. of Pokemon: No restrictions
Pokemon level: No restrictions
Special Pokemon: Permitted
Same Pokemon: Permitted
Same items: Permitted

Here's what that meant:

No. of Pokemon: The ones that you can use in battles, the maximum 6, the minimum 3
Pokemon level: What their levels will be, either Set to 50 (no matter what all Pokemon at lvl 50), Upto 50 (if the Pokemon's level is more than 50, it will be rouded off to 50, else it will retain it's level) and No restrictions (meaning the Pokemon will be the level they are, there will be no changes)
Special Pokemon: Legendary Pokemon with BST over 600
Same Pokemon: Speaks for itself
Same items: Again, speaks for itself

PS - Battle Spot strictly follows Flat rules in all formats of battles (single, double, triple, rotation)

Hope I helped!
