Would this still work?

On my team, I have a Tyranitar and Excadrill. My Tyranitar has Sand Stream, and Excadrill has Sand Rush. My plan is to have Tyranitar use Sand Stream, and then sweep with Excadrill, who's holding a Smooth Rock. My question is: If Tyranitar faints on the first turn, and I send out Excadrill, will the Smooth still increase the duration the sandstorm? Or will the first Pokémon sent out (Tyranitar) need to holding the Smooth for effect to take place?

Tyranitar must hold the Smooth Rock for this to work as it´s Tyranitar that creates the sandstorm.
