Can I use substitute then explosion in that order and still live?

I was thinking of teaching it to forretress but its hard to get substitute so before I try I want to make sure it will work.

Yes, it will kill the Substitute but of course your Forretress as well. Basically you waste a turn using Substitute if all you want is to explode. I suggest to teach it Pain Split instead.
