How are there X and Y sprites?

Question

If all the Pokemon are modeled in 3D, why do we have sprites? The only in-game sprites I've seen are the mini ones in the PC.

Wouldn't they just copy the 2D sprite?

Smogon is creating them, mainly for use on their site and on Pokemon Showdown.
