How do I get out of Cerulean City in Blue?

Question

This sounds really stupid but I can't find the exit to get from Cerulean City to my next destination. (Which I think is the S.S. Anne) the town map says go south but it is blocked by a tree and I don't have cut yet. Also, I see a path which you get to by going down stairs but I don't know how to get to the stairs. Please help!

Isn't there an exit in the back of the gym?

You have to go out the digger house after a team rocket member has stolen the TM Dig. There is a hole in the back of the house that you can walk through and get down to Vermelion City.

That was a diggers house? I thought it was a police station. Thanks a lot! Believe it or not i would have been stuck there for hours!
