My friend wanted to know if he puts his DS date to May 8th the wi-fi event would work

No. On May 8th, Game Freak is going to send out a signal to Pokemon games that will give them the data for Doexys. Setting your DS to that date will do nothing whatsoever, because it isn't programmed into the game.
