How does thunderbolt kill geodude??

Question

Ash's pikachu's thunderbolt kill brocks geodude and onix but can't hurt quagsire or swampert.

did they used to be only rock types

Yes, I know it (if it's in TV cartoon series) let's see, when ash battle with brock, the Pewter gym leader, right? pikachu thunderbolt are effect because, Onyx body is wet and it's attack near Geodude... but TV and Game are different. in other TV series, Pikachu's Thunderbolt doesn't effect to wild Tailow! Cartoon is weird...
