Chapter 3 part 2
“I’m Flower,” Flower said. “Do you want to have a battle, so we can get stronger for the Gym Leader?” Skip readily accepted, and the two new friends took their positions in the middle of town. A few curious townspeople stopped to watch, making sure to keep a safe distance.
“Sicatamese! Let’s go!” Skip yelled, throwing his Pokeball in front of him.
“Sneasel! Do your best!” Flower countered, throwing down her own Pokeball. The two Pokemon gracefully materialized from their Pokeballs, eyeing each other cautiously.
“Sneasel, Quick Attack!” Flower shouted. The small Pokemon darted forwards and slashed a quick blow across Sicatamese, despite the feline Pokemon’s best efforts to defend itself.
“Sicatamese, shake it off and use Scratch!” Skip commanded. Flower’s Sneasel was able to get out of the way, but not before Sicatamese struck it with a powerful paw. The Sneasel counterattacked with a Feint Attack, before dodging Sicatamese’s second Scratch attack.
Skip was concerned. His Sicatamese was weak, but Flower’s Sneasel still had lots of health. Before he could decide what to do, however, Flower spoke again.
“Sneasel, finish it with Quick Attack!” she said. The agile Pokemon lashed out at Skip’s Sicatamese once more, knocking it out. The spectators of the battle murmured appreciatively.
Skip returned his partner to its Pokeball, then selected his second Pokemon. “Warwasp! Come on out!” The small insectoid buzzed around, hovering in the air close to Skip.
“Use Night Slash!” Skip yelled to his second Pokemon. Warwasp sped towards its opponent at a blistering pace, and slashed Flower’s Pokemon with its bladed arms. The Sneasel returned with a Quick Attack, knocking back Skip’s lightweighted Pokemon.
“Warwasp! Use Bug Bite!” Skip countered. It was this super effective hit that knocked out Flower’s Sneasel, which collapsed to the ground, out of energy.
Flower looked surprised, but only for a moment. Then she sent out her Rhododora, which landed on the ground easily.
“Rhododora, use Body Slam!” she commanded. The Pokemon jumped impossibly high, before landing right on top of Skip’s Warwasp, knocking the small Pokemon out of the battle.
Skip gaped. “A Rhododora with Body Slam? But it doesn’t learn that move until it’s level forty or so!”
“It’s also an egg move,” Flower responded. “My grandpa really knew what he was doing when he bred this Rhododora.”
Skip sent out Sploray, which bared its small fangs at its opponent. That match, however, wasn’t even a contest. The Rhododora used Razor Leaf, knocking out Sploray in a single hit. The small crowd watching the battle clapped politely, then slowly dispersed.
“Nice job, Flower,” Skip said, slightly disappointed.
“Thanks!” Flower said happily. “You were a fun opponent to battle! Should we go try to challenge the Gym after we heal our Pokemon?”
“Sounds good,” Skip said. “Let’s go.” They went back to the Pokemon Center, healed their Pokemon, and headed to the Gym next door. Just before the pair reached the entrance to the Gym, the door was flung open by a girl familiar to Skip, walking quickly and haughtily.
“Hey!” Flower yelled at Beatrice. “You could have hit us!”
“Who cares?” Beatrice retorted. “I just brutally defeated Pixa and got the Glisten Badge. I don’t have to listen to people that don’t even have a single Badge yet. Skip, tell your annoying new girlfriend to stop yelling at me.”
Flower turned purple with rage at Beatrice’s last sentence, and opened her mouth to respond angrily. “I am NOT his girl--”
“Flower, don’t yell at Beatrice,” Skip hastily cut her off. “It’ll just make her even more obnoxious.”
Beatrice smirked at Flower, then walked off towards the rest of Larko.
As soon as she was out of earshot, Flower said bitterly, “She’s a jerk. What makes her so entitled and snobbish?”
“I don’t know, Flower,” Skip responded. “But let’s just try to fight Pixa, okay? Don’t worry about Beatrice.” They entered the Gym and noticed a person standing by the entrance, wearing a uniform with the Gym logo on it.
“Excuse me, sir, but how do we fight Pixa?” Skip said, hurrying up to him. The man turned around.
“Hi there. I’m the official Gym referee of Larko City, Clyde. I’m sorry, but you kids are a little too late,” he began.
“We’re late? Why?” Flower asked.
“Pixa’s always been a little flighty,” Clyde mused. “After she was beaten by that last Gym Challenger, she left the Gym in a huff. Guess she didn’t like to be defeated so absolutely. She’s probably not going to be back until tomorrow, though. Do you kids want to make reservations to fight her tomorrow?”  he inquired.
“Sure, I guess,” Skip said, a little disappointed. He signed the paper Clyde held in front of him. “Flower? Are you going to make a reservation?”
“Yeah, sure,” she responded. “I just wish we could fight her now.” She hesitantly signed Clyde’s paper as well.
“Mr. Clyde, where are we supposed to spend the night?” Flower asked. If we’re supposed to stay in Larko until Pixa comes back, where will we sleep?”
Skip had been wondering the same. Thankfully, Clyde gave them a good answer.
“The Pokemon Center here has a small hotel on its upper floors. People often spend the night there when waiting to fight Pixa. You just need to tell Nurse Joy that you’re waiting for Pixa, and she’ll give you a couple rooms to stay in.
“Thanks!” Skip said, grateful for the help. “Let’s go, Flower.”
As they walked back outside the Gym, Skip noticed that the sunlight was fading, making way for the night. He had no idea he was in Larko for so long. Skip and Flower walked back to the Pokemon Center, asked for rooms, and were led to the upper floors by Larko’s local Nurse Joy. She showed them each their rooms, and Skip and Flower thanked her.
As Skip entered his room, he became aware of how tired he was. He walked to the bed in the room, and eventually dozed off for the night.

Chapter 3 part 1
As Skip travelled through the rest of Route 2, he knew he was close to Larko City. He could see the tallest of Larko’s buildings peeking out through Route 2’s tree line, which made him walk slightly faster. Skip was extremely excited to get his first Gym Badge, and he couldn’t wait to get to Larko City.
Suddenly, the trees around Skip parted, and he realised he was in Larko City.
It isn’t very big, Skip thought, his brow furrowed. Aren’t cities generally a bit larger? Skip saw a couple houses, a Pokemon Center, and the Pokemon Gym. There was also a rectangular flower bed in the middle of the city, surrounded by a fence. He also noticed a few people out and about around the city, but his eyes quickly passed over them.
I should probably go to the Pokemon Center, Skip thought. After all, Claude kind of wrecked my team. He entered the Pokemon Center, healed his Pokemon, and bought more Pokeballs and Potions. Exiting the Pokemon Center, Skip heard the distinct sound of a girl yelling. Looking around, he saw a girl yelling commands to her Pokemon, a Rhododora and a Sneasel. Skip found that interesting. As far as he knew, Rhododora was only a starter Pokemon, and couldn’t be found in the wild. The two Pokemon seemed to be involved in a mock training battle, darting, weaving, and trading blows with each other. After gracefully dodging an attack from the Rhododora, the girl’s Sneasel looked over its shoulder and saw Skip.
With a cry, the small Pokemon launched itself at Skip and Quick Attacked him across the legs. With a grunt, Skip fell down hard, and braced for more attacks. However, almost immediately, the Sneasel’s trainer recalled the Pokemon, and rushed over to Skip’s side.
“Hi!” she began nervously. “Um, I’m sorry about my Sneasel. He sometimes gets overexcited when we do training battles. Want a hand up?” She extended her arm and helped Skip get to his feet.
“Thanks,” Skip said. “It’s fine, he didn’t hurt me badly or anything.” He examined the girl. She was skinny and tall, with blue eyes and red hair. She seemed to be bouncing from foot to foot in nervous anticipation as she tried to decide whether Skip really was okay. As the girl turned to recall her Rhododora, Skip was struck by a sudden thought.
“How do you have that Rhododora?” he asked. “I didn’t realize anyone except Professor Wisteria had them, but you weren’t a Trainer School graduate.”
“Oh, my grandpa used to be a really good Pokemon Trainer. He had all eight badges before he retired. His starter Pokemon was a Rhododora. After it evolved and he retired, he bred his Abundage to give me this Rhododora as a present. He wanted me to go on my own adventure, and become the Champion!” she responded. “But so far, I don’t have any badges. I want to get better, though. What are you doing?”
“I also want to become the Champion,” Skip said. “I was actually about to challenge Larko’s Gym.”
“Oh, you were?” the girl asked. “Do you want to, um, maybe travel together so we can get stronger?”
“Sure!” Skip said, delighted that he would have a companion in his travels across Aria. “But I think that we should know each other's names first, right? I’m Skip.”

Chapter 2 (sorry again)

As Skip emerged onto Route One, he noticed for the first time how sparse it was, leading directly to Rook Town. However, he did notice a Potion nestled in the tall grass that both Beatrice and Claude seemed to have missed.
Good for me, I guess, he thought to himself. No doubt this Potion would prove useful in a battle to come. On his way back out of the grass, however, he noticed a rustling to his left.
Huh? What was that? A wild Pokemon? Skip thought. I guess I’ll check it out. Could be a useful team member. Skip slowly and carefully made his way over to the shaking he heard in the grass. As the foliage parted, he saw a wild Sicatamese on the ground, preening itself delicately. As Skip moved forwards, it looked up sharply with a hiss, then quickly prepared itself to launch at him.
“Go! Sploray!” Skip shouted, bringing forth his first partner from its Pokeball. The watery eel circled the wild Pokemon, then at the command of his trainer, lunged forward to attack. The Tackle attack left the Sicatamese dazed on the ground, and before it could react, Skip had swiftly encapsulated it into a Pokeball. The ball shook once, then twice, before hesitating. Skip involuntarily crossed his fingers and held his breath, then the final click signifying the Pokemon had been caught arrived.
Skip let out a whoop. He did it! He caught a Pokemon! Emboldened by his great act, he hurried onwards to Rook Town.
Not to his surprise, when he got there, he saw Beatrice and Claude arguing on one of the side paths in Rook Town. Not wanting to be involved, he quickly sidled over to the Pokemon Center, where the friendly nurse at the counter healed his Pokemon, before wishing him good luck in his journeys. After exiting the Pokemon Center, Skip noticed that both Beatrice and Claude were gone. Skip happily walked onwards out of Rook Town, and into Route 2. He observed  that the Route, much like Route 1, was very sparse, but there were a few trainers along the path.
Some of these people could be good training for my Pokemon, Skip thought. Might as well challenge them. And so he walked up to the first person in the grass.
“Hey!” Skip said. “I challenge you to a battle!”
The young boy looked at Skip. “You’re on. Let’s do this!” The boy sent out a Shrewcure, a Pokemon Skip had never seen before. Still, Skip felt confident about the battle. After all, he had beaten his classmate at the Trainer’s School.
“I’ve already used Sploray in a battle,” Skip mused. “So it’s time to train up Sicatamese! Go, Sicatamese!”
The elegant cat Pokemon burst out of its Pokeball, and looked down its nose at the opposing Shrewcure. The mousy Pokemon trembled, making it weaker. Its trainer looked surprised.
“Your Sicatamese has the ability Vain Gaze?” he said. “That’s rare. Not many of them can do that. No matter. Shrewcure, use Scratch!”
The Pokemon lunged at Skip’s Sicatamese, dealing respectable damage.
“Sicatamese! Use Scratch as well!” Skip yelled.
The vain Pokemon was stronger than the Shrewcure, managing to score a critical hit, knocking out its foe. For the second time after leaving his hometown, Skip let out a cheer. He had emerged victorious in his first unsupervised Pokemon battle. His opponent sighed, defeated, and handed Skip his earnings. Thanking him, Skip hurried onwards to Plumage Forest.
“Sicatamese, you did great!” Skip exclaimed. “Your first ever battle, too!” His feline companion allowed itself to look smugly pleased.
Entering the Plumage Forest, Skip got slightly confused. The paths seemed to twist everywhere, without reason or order. Skip noticed another person several metres to his left, and hurried over to ask for directions.
    “Excuse me! Ma’am!” Skip yelled.
    The lady turned. “Yes?”
“Can I have directions, please? I don’t know how to get through this forest,” Skip said, slightly embarrassed.
A quick flash of a smile appeared on the woman’s face. “Well, you’re certainly not the first one, child,” she told him. “I get a lot of people asking for directions. Listen carefully. Go up, right, straight, up, left, up, then go straight for the rest. That’ll put you at the exit of this forest. Want me to repeat that?”
“Thank you, ma’am!” Skip said. “This forest is like a maze. Why is it so confusing?”
“The woman shrugged, looking a little perplexed. “I don’t know. I didn’t make it, after all.”
Skip went onwards, following the directions the woman gave him, muttering under his breath as he went.
“Up, right, straight--did she say straight? Or was it right? I think it was straight-- up, left--woah!”
That last part was because a small Pokemon had burst out of the grass near Skip’s feet, and nearly tripped him. After a string of annoyed words under his breath, Skip took a closer look at the Pokemon that tripped him, and saw that it was some sort of Bug-type.
“Hey, Pokedex, what is this thing?” Skip asked his Pokedex’s scanner.
“Warwasp, the Trainee Pokemon,” his Pokedex whirred. “Generally guarded and trained by Eliminasp, their objective is to take out any foe. A combination of the Bug and Dark types.”
“So this guy sees me as a threat?” Skip mused. “Let’s neutralise it, then! Sploray! Weaken that Pokemon!” Skip’s first Pokemon burst out of its Pokeball, gracefully gliding above the ground. It let loose a Bubble attack, hitting the little wasp straight in the body. However, the small assassin was tougher than it looked, and delivered a powerful Night Slash to Skip’s Sploray. Skip, however, was undeterred.
“Sploray! Use Bubble again!” he commanded. When Sploray lunged again, the opposing Warwasp was stunned and could not move. Seeing his chance, Skip threw a Pokeball at it. It shook once, then twice, then clicked.
“All right!” Skip cheered. “I caught another! I’ve got three Pokemon on my team now! And it’s all thanks to you, Sploray!” Skip’s companion looked pleased, then went back to its Pokeball. Remembering the woman at the start of the forest’s directions once more, Skip quickly got to the exit of the Plumage Forest, before running out of it, back into the dazzling sunlight on Route 2. All set for a relaxing walk through the rest of Route 2, Skip was somewhat surprised when he heard a familiar voice.
“Skip!” Claude yelled, running up to him. “So you finally got through Plumage Forest, huh? Took you long enough. I’ve already got my first Gym Badge!” he proudly held up the sparkling badge in front of Skip. “Anyways, I challenge you to a battle!” Let’s see if you have what it takes to beat Pixa!”
“A battle, Claude? Okay, let’s do this!” Skip responded. “Go, Sicatamese!”
Claude also sent out a Sicatamese, and the two felines squared off.
“Sicatamese, use Scratch!” Skip yelled.
Sicatamese, dodge and return with your own Scratch!” Claude countered.
“Scratch!”
“Scratch!”
“Dodge that, Sicatamese! Tackle!”
“Tackle it yourself, Sicatamese!”
“Growl!”
It was this last command that ultimately caused Skip to lose that matchup. After his Sicatamese Growled, Claude’s kept on coming, and knocked out Skip’s first Pokemon with a swift Tackle. Skip sent out his new Warwasp, after a minute of shock, and ordered it to Night Slash. Claude’s Sicatamese was knocked out, and a Mimichirp flew out from his second ball. Type matchups got the better of Skip, and after two attacks, his Warwasp was knocked out as well. He retaliated with Sploray, knocking out Mimichirp with a Bite attack. Claude brought out Ponembré, which was quickly and effectively knocked out by a few Bubble attacks.
“Nice work, Skip!” Claude said as he handed Skip his earnings. “I wasn’t expecting that one. Close battle!”
“I’ll say,” Skip responded. “I thought for sure you would have won. See you around, I guess. I’ve gotta get my first Gym Badge. Bye!” And onwards through Route 2 Skip went, as he headed to the first Gym city, Larko City.

Chapter 1 (apologies about the length)

Skip woke to a loud knocking at his front door. He lay in bed for a while longer, hoping whoever was at the door would go away. His mother worked long hours as a Gym Battle referee, and she wasn’t home, so she couldn’t answer the door for him. When the knocking got even louder, however, Skip sleepily got out of bed to answer the door. The second he opened the door, he noticed his friend Claude outside, practically dancing with anticipation.
“Skip!” Claude exclaimed. “Hurry up! Professor Wisteria’s evaluation is in ten minutes, and you know how she likes everyone on time!”
“It’s in ten minutes!? Claude, are you serious? I thought it wasn’t for another hour!” Skip said, shocked.
“You have to hurry, Skip! The Professor will be furious! I hope you studied!” Claude said. And without another word, he ran in the direction of Professor Wisteria’s Trainer School. Now Skip was slightly panicking. He thought he had plenty of time to study. Now, he would just have to hope for the best. He got ready and sprinted to the Trainer School with barely a minute to spare, and sat down at his desk just as Professor Wisteria entered the room.
The Professor was a short, old lady, and yet had an air of intimidation before her. She knew a lot about Pokemon, and also instructed young pupils that wished to become Pokemon Trainers. Today was the last day of the year, and she was going to select three of her students to get Pokemon.
“All right, students. I’m exceptionally glad to see that all of you are here today, given some of your track records with attendance.” She paused, surveying the room. “As all of you know. Today is your last day. I will set you through examinations. Anyone that passes will battle until there are three victors. Those three will receive their Pokemon, and graduate from my school. Any questions? No? Excellent. Let’s begin.”
And so they started. At the end of each examination, a few more students were eliminated. Skip passed all examinations, albeit with some difficulty. He noticed that Claude made it through them all, and he got generally higher scores than Skip. Apart from Skip and Claude, four other students managed to make it through the exams.
“You six,” Professor Wisteria began, after all the students that failed had left, “are the few from my class to get this far. Congratulations. I will now distribute one Sicatamese to each of you, with which you shall battle. Winning your battle ensures you a Pokemon. Losing gives you nothing.”
A Poke Ball was distributed to each person. Skip was paired up with a girl he didn’t know much about. She seemed pretty inexperienced with battling, and Skip defeated her Sicatamese with just a few Scratch attacks. Looking around, he saw the other two battles wrapping up quickly, and to his relief, he saw Claude as one of the victors. The other was a girl named Beatrice, who Skip also didn’t know much about.
“Congratulations, you three,” the Professor said. “Decide amongst yourselves who will choose their Pokemon first, then select.”
“Skip should select first,” said Claude. “He deserves it. He finished his battle faster than either one of us, Beatrice.”
“Excuse me?” Beatrice retorted. “I’m clearly the best Pokemon Trainer here. Skip’s victory was more due to that girl’s inexperience more than his proficiency. I should pick first.”
“Oh, just play Grass, Fire, Water with each other to decide,” Claude sighed.
“Fine. Grass, Fire, Water, shoot!” Skip yelled, as his hand formed the Water symbol, while Beatrice’s displayed Fire. Excitement pulsed through Skip. He was the one to select his starter Pokemon first!
“So, Skip, are you ready to choose?” Professor Wisteria asked. “Here are your three choices. Rhododora, the Budding Pokemon,”--she tossed a Pokeball to reveal a curious-looking green Pokemon with a leaf as a tail-- “Ponembré, the Flame Hoof Pokemon,” --she threw down a second ball to display a Pokemon that slightly resembled a tougher-looking Ponyta-- “And Sploray, the Eel Pokemon.” --she opened a third Pokeball, revealing a vicious looking Pokemon that looked like a blue eel.
Skip carefully considered all three. He liked the look of all of them, but in the end he decided to choose the Pokemon he thought would be the most powerful.
“Sploray, I want you to be my partner!” Skip exclaimed. Sploray regarded him as he picked the Eel Pokemon up, and seemed to accept his new trainer.
“Interesting,” Professor Wisteria mused. “Ordinarily, that Sploray bites whoever comes near. You two already appear to have a bond.”
“Oh, enough of this. Just let me choose already,” Beatrice grumbled. “Give me the Rhododora.” She picked up the leafy Pokemon, which snuggled into her arms. Grumbling to herself, she exited the school.
“Guess that leaves me with Ponembré, then!” Claude said brightly. “I would have picked that one anyways!” As he knelt to smile at the largest of the three starters, it stared at him coolly, then turned away, its head in the air. Claude’s face fell for a fraction of a second, but he quickly regained himself.
“Well, if we’re going on some great adventure, we should probably let our moms know, right Skip?” Claude said.
“Definitely. We don’t want them to worry about us,” Skip answered.
“You boys don’t have to worry,” Professor Wisteria said. “I’ve already let them know. They’re proud of you, and you can leave whenever you want. But before you go, take ten Pokeballs each. You’ll need them soon. I’d also like to entrust you both with one Pokedex.. Use it to record data on all the Pokemon you meet.”
“Awesome! Thanks, Professor!” Claude said. “I’m going now! I can’t wait! But Skip, take this Town Map. I have an extra, and you probably need it to get your bearing in Aria. Enjoy!” Then he turned and sprinted out of the Trainer’s School, towards Route 1.
Professor Wisteria sighed. “That boy. Always rushing, but he never thinks. If he wants to be a good trainer, he’s got to learn to focus. Anyways, Skip, enjoy your Pokemon. Best of luck on your journey. And never forget to have fun.”
“Thank you, Professor,” Skip said. “I’ll try to fill in the Pokedex for you, and have fun by myself. Goodbye, I guess.” And with that final sentence, Skip happily turned and left the Trainer’s School, en route to Route 1.
