Why do we call amber colored stop lights yellow?

Where I live they’re actually called amber. I think the reasoning behind calling it “yellow” when it’s amber is simply to simplify it. Red and Green lights aren’t called Crimson and Viridan, so Amber feels out of place. And likewise, it’s too much of a mouthful to say those in place of red and green.

In conclusion, amber feels too out of place despite being the offical word, so we call it yellow.
And the reason why we don’t make red and green other words to fit more is because it’s a mouthful.

Idk why they didn’t just make it yellow to begin with; possibly because it looks orange to some?
