Hey thanks for agreeing with me. Apparently people don't have a problem with me trying to help someone else lol

Good luck with that as well!

Thank you! Honestly, I really think I can, if promotions don't roll around first. I'm confident in being able to get 6k, tbh. Good luck getting to 500!

Chiefly through experience playing the game. Reading will give you an idea of *what* is happening, but you might not get to the *why* until you've experienced it yourself.
With that said, Smogon has pretty good resources that will at least give you some things to look out for and help you make some informed decisions.
* Usage stats for Showdown (including movesets), which you can narrow to high-rating matches. Includes official formats (i.e. not Smogon), but obviously only data from Showdown: https://www.smogon.com/stats/
* Smogon's strategy Pokedex, which is written by many experienced players and should give you an idea of each Pokemon's niche (if any) and how they match against each other. Also, explanations of how each battle format operates: https://www.smogon.com/dex/
* Sub-forums for current tiers/metagames, where you can find viability rankings, speed tier tables, suspect test discussions and more that should keep you versed in what's happening in the game. https://www.smogon.com/forums/forums/525/
* Closed forums for old metagames: https://www.smogon.com/forums/categories/283/
You can also find advice on YouTube, especially on what to think about when you're playing battles. YT has a lot of bad information on it though, so you need to be discerning. The most popular videos are not always the best. I recommend Pokeaim and NathanLikesChicken for Smogon formats, but I'm not well-versed in VGC.

The Pokémon Company wanted to, I guess. They didn’t explicitly say why, but it’s most likely that it’s to shake up the metagame as they were the top ten most used Pokémon in Singles and Doubles.

Teach you? I’m not sure I’m qualified to teach you! I just started VGC in May, really. I can recommend some good sources, though. The pinned video on Aaron “Cybertron” Zheng’s YouTube Channel (A very good VGC Player/Commentator) is an excellent starter guide to VGC. You should ignore the common meta threats he mentions since this video is old, but it’s still a very good resource. I have also watched hours of Wolfe Glick’s videos, especially the “getting to number one” videos. Try show how real competitive players think about the game, and I try to imitate them. I also like watching Cybertron and Osiris Studios, they are also good Competitive Players that usually give in-game rental teams to use as well. Use Pikalytics to know what Pokémon are common, and ultimately, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. My first season I barely got to Poke Ball Tier, but this month I reached top 1000 in the world. And feel free to wall me if you have any questions or want to battle, in-game or on Showdown :)
